Scandlines is significantly strengthening its dangerous goods (DG) transport services with the introduction of The Baltic Whale, a new freight-only ferry that will begin operating on the Rødby–Puttgarden route in 2026. The new vessel marks a major step forward for companies transporting hazardous cargo between Scandinavia and mainland Europe, offering greater flexibility, increased capacity, and more frequent departures.
Designed specifically for freight, The Baltic Whale can carry nearly all dangerous goods classes, including several that were previously subject to restrictions. Its open-deck configuration enables a wider range of hazardous cargo to be transported safely and efficiently. The vessel will operate up to 24 departures per day, while standard ferries on the route continue to offer up to 96 daily crossings for dangerous goods without passenger restrictions.
The new service also delivers operational benefits for logistics companies. By using the shorter Rødby–Puttgarden crossing, transport operators can avoid detours of more than 150 kilometres, reducing fuel consumption, travel time, and emissions. In addition, the 45-minute ferry crossing can be used as part of the driver’s mandatory rest period, helping improve efficiency and compliance with driving regulations. Customers are advised to book as early as possible and check in up to 60 minutes before departure.
